Even before kids know about other types of breads, they are already familiar with garlic bread. With spaghetti as a standard meal in many homes across America, people begin eating garlic bread at such a young age. This bread is made using slices or hunks of thick bread (French or Italian) slathered with butter and sprinkled with garlic and herbs. Pasta dishes and other entrees are traditionally served with garlic bread. It is a very popular kind of bread which is commercially available and at the same time may be prepared at home. If you want to serve extra special garlic bread, check out the recipe below.

It all starts with a loaf of bread. You can any use any type of supermarket purchased bread such as Italian or French bread. Breads baked with additional ingredients such as sesame seeds or cheeses may also be used. You will need a lot of butter, garlic powder, salt, and minced garlic. There are two ways to add the garlic flavor. One is by combining the garlic and butter to make a spread; and the other is by melting the butter in advance and allowing it to cool as one prepares the garlic spread.

To prepare the bread, split open the loaf and fill the cavity with a butter and garlic mixture. Next, put the loaf on a sheet of aluminum foil. Make a lengthwise cut down the middle of the loaf without cutting through the bottom crust. Another option is to make horizontal cuts and filling the slits with butter, minced garlic and garlic powder, then wrapping the loaf in aluminum foil. Heat the oven for several minutes to melt the butter and to let the garlic flavor penetrate into the bread.

Another way to prepare garlic bread is by separating the loaf into slices or sections and putting butter and garlic on each individual piece. This is done by using a kitchen knife to slice the bread into sections. If you are one of those people who prefer to tear the loaf into pieces instead of slicing it, that is okay too. Put the pieces of bread on a cookie sheet that has been thickly buttered and sprinkled with garlic salt or powder. You can also add minced garlic as a topping if you wish. Put the baking sheet into a preheated oven until the butter melts and the garlic flavor seeps into the bread. This method creates crunchier garlic bread compared to the type that has been wrapped in foil and baked.

For people who do not have the time to make homemade garlic bread, there are commercially prepared ones available. These come in their own aluminum pouch and all one needs to do is stick them in the oven long enough for the butter to melt.

Pasta is never quite the same if not served with garlic bread. When paired with an entree or tossed salad, garlic bread perfectly balances out meal and gives that it a pleasant garlicky kick that many people love.
